Colorful leaves signal that Autumn is on its way. The air cools, and your home’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems switch into a different mode, transitioning from cool to warm. Our experts at Affordable Fixes recommend preparing your HVAC system for the fall season to avoid breakdowns and energy loss.

There are simple steps you can take to prepare your HVAC system for the cooler months ahead. Create a checklist for yourself and schedule these items on your calendar as reminders.
- Air Filters
The most important matter is cleaning or replacing the air filter. You want a clear, clean airflow so your furnace doesn’t have to work hard. Additionally, a refreshed air filter can help alleviate allergies. The best practice is to clean the filter every three months. Alternatively (at minimum), do so at the beginning of fall and spring.
- Outdoor Cleanup
If you have a heat pump or central air conditioner, inspect the exterior unit. Clean away any debris. Ensure there are two feet of clearance all around for adequate airflow.
- Check Your Heater
Before you have to use the heater regularly, let it run for 5-10 minutes. At first, you might smell the dust burning off the coils, but that dissipates. Listen for any noises. This could indicate a problem that Affordable Fixes can look into. If you have a programmable thermostat, now’s the time to set your heating modes. Decreasing the temperature at night or when you’re away from home for extended periods can result in lower energy bills.
Just as you want a clean area around your exterior HVAC unit, you also want to inspect the house for blocked and/or dirty vents. Move furniture so it’s not right on top of an output area (it restricts flow)—dust off the registers. If the vents appear to have a lot of debris, you may want to schedule a professional inspection and cleaning appointment.
While you’re at it, test the CO detectors and fire detectors. Replace the batteries. If you’ve had either for more than a decade, replace them.

Calling Affordable Fixes for Service
The best efforts to prepare your HVAC for the fall season aren’t a guarantee that something won’t go wrong with the system. It’s the reality of homeownership. Because of this, we recommend annual servicing for safety and efficiency checks. The inspection includes checking the heat exchange, electrical connections, motors, ductwork, and burner assembly. Afterward, we report our findings and, if necessary, compile an appraisal for any required repairs.
Our team has over 30 years of experience. Affordable Fixes takes pride in providing superior customer service and excellent workmanship that comes with a guarantee. Better still, we won’t make a mess. We leave your home in the same condition as we found it.
